Cleaning your Windscreen

The CORRECT Way to Clean Your Windscreen – Straight from the Professionals

Keeping your windscreen squeaky clean provides a multitude of benefits besides aesthetic reasons. Consistently removing the grime, dirt and debris from your glass will keep it in good condition for longer, improve your vision while driving and keep your car feeling brand new. A build-up of dirt on your windscreen often causes subtle, but hard-to-remove scratches that are proven to significantly decrease a drivers vision and can cause road accidents putting yourself and others in danger. If a windscreen is in bad enough condition, it can even warrant a fine and demerit point loss if pulled over by a traffic officer.

We’re offering a quick guide to prevent all of this. Cleaning your windscreen should be something that you do on the regular and is a trouble free and easy process that you can do by simply following the steps below:

Exterior:

Required tools and materials:

  • Glass cleaner or a specialised windscreen cleaner
  • High quality, NEW microfibre cloths (preferably 2)

Steps:

  1. Lift-up both windscreen wipers from the glass and point out of the way
  2. Coat half of the windscreen with glass cleaner, being sure to cover the entire reachable area
  3. Wipe the sprayed area of glass with one of the microfibre cloths being sure to wipe in one direction to prevent streaks
  4. Repeat the previous 2 steps on the other side of the windscreen
  5. After the glass has been sprayed, spray glass cleaner onto the blades of the window wipers
  6. Using a cloth, pinch the blade and wipe downward removing any build-up of dirt on the wipers
  7. Using the second cloth, buff the windscreen using circular motions being careful to not touch the glass with your hands
  8. Be sure to wipe the edges and trim of the windscreen to prevent overspray showing up when dry

Interior:

The approach to cleaning the inside of your windscreen is slightly different from the exterior as there is often a layer of grease and contaminants on the glass caused by the off gases from vinyl and plastic dashboards.

Required tools and materials:

  • Cleaning or rubbing alcohol
  • Multiple new, CLEAN microfibre cloths
  • Alcohol based window cleaner (Be sure to use an alcohol based cleaner to prevent damaging upholstered or leather interiors)

Steps:

  1. Use one of the clean microfibre cloths to wipe down along where the glass and dashboard meet removing any loose dirt
  2. Using the clean side of the cloth, begin wiping down the glass with vertical motions
  3. Apply the rubbing alcohol to a fresh glass and start wiping the inside of the glass with circular motions. Remove any solvent that drips onto the dashboard immediately to prevent staining or other damage
  4. Spray the window cleaner onto a fresh cloth and use vertical motions to wipe down the whole surface of the windscreen

An extra level of shine:

If you’d like to achieve a show-room level of shine on the exterior of your windscreen then you can complete the following steps AFTER you have already performed the basic clean on the interior and exterior surfaces.

Required tools and materials:

  • Room temperature water in a spray bottle
  • Regular glass cleaner
  • Rainx or other waterproofing material for glass applications
  • Multiple new, CLEAN microfibre cloths
  • Clay bar

Steps:

  1. Spray the exterior of the windscreen with water
  2. Using the clay bar, wipe the glass in circular, then vertical, motions
  3. Spray the windscreen with glass cleaner and use the same vertical motions to wipe with a microfibre cloth
  4. Leave to dry for a moment and apply the waterproofing material with one of the microfibre cloths. Buff out with another clean cloth
  5. Repeat step 3 cleaning the entire surface with window cleaner

Conclusion:

Following these steps every couple of weeks will ensure that you’ll be getting the most time out of your windscreen as possible. You’ll be sure to notice the time that you put in and your windscreen will be looking cleaner than ever before.
